Few Thoughts 6-1-2017

Greetings on the First of June! I trust you enjoyed a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend.  Many of you are swamped right now with schools finishing up, graduation ceremonies to attend, and perhaps weddings to participate in.  It’s that time of the year!

Last Saturday Leslie and I made our way up the coast to sing and speak in the El Morro COTN.  I’ll let you figure out which of us did what…  We were able to get there before sunset, so we took off for one of our favorite spots out near Montaña del Oro.  If you have never been there… it’s a must see spot.  I just had to snap a selfie of us, plus a few other photos… so here we go…

ENCOURAGEMENTSummer in the Psalms  Blessed is the man who does not walk in the step of the wicked or stand in the way that the sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yield its fruit in season – whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.  (Psalm 1:1-3)

Since it is June 1… I’ve decided to take a personal journey, beginning today, through the Book of Psalms for the summer.  I preached one summer, years ago, through the Book of Psalms using this same title… I enjoyed it so much… I’ve decided to do it again in my personal devotional journey.  Who doesn’t like the Psalms!?

I’ve been doing some thinking on that word “meditate”… and the writer encourages us to meditate on the Lord’s law… His Word… day and night.  There are many times I find myself in the car driving to or from somewhere.  Many of us enjoy CDs with music… or the radio… or talk shows… or books on CDs… you name it.  If you spend a lot of time in the car, you perhaps, try a myriad of things to occupy time.

Meditating… for me is often praying… reviewing scripture in my mind.  Listening, or at least trying to listen to the Lord in decisions that need to be made.  Sometimes I meditate on His Word while in the car, and then enter a time of prayer, thinking alphabetically, of the churches on the district.  Other times I will start (in my mind) up the coast and work my way down to the heart of the city.  Other times I begin up in the desert.  Or East along the 210, 10, or 60 and work my way to the coast.  Many times I begin by praying for family, those who are nearest to me (my wife, daughters, parents, siblings…)  It’s so much fun, isn’t it… to dwell on His Word, and enter a time of prayer for so many needs we are aware of?

My desire for this summer is to see my life, my family, the needs I bring to Him (including churches, district matters) whatever they may be… but as I enter a time of meditation on Him, and His Word, and lift these areas of concern to the One and Only who can make a difference, Jesus Christ – God’s Son… that in every case… we will be like a tree FIRMLY PLANTED by streams of water.  And we will be productive.  For the Lord has called us, His Church, to bear fruit.

 Are you firmly planted today?

DISTRICT MATTERSThere seems to always be more and more to report on of all the happenings across the Los Angeles District.  As we wrap up the books for the fiscal year, I want to thank all of you for your faithfulness and commitment to the Lord, His church, and this wonderful district.  You are so kind and doing an excellent work in the places you serve.

  • District Assembly:  May I encourage you to print the Assembly flier to promote the conventions and assembly that is coming up next month?  I look forward to seeing you at PazNaz from July 12-14.  Assembly Flier
  • El Morro:  As we continue the journey during these days of transition, I covet your prayers for this wonderful church body.  Leslie and I had three wonderful services there this weekend and enjoyed the fellowship with everyone who came.  Pastor Jenene Watkins and Pastor Dan Chapman, along with the leadership team are doing a great job keeping things together.  I look forward to seeing all that God will do in Los Osos and Morro Bay.

  • Oxnard:  I can hardly wait for June 11 to roll around, since this will be the Sunday Pastor Alan Jr. and Geebel Arevalo will be installed as the new pastors in Oxnard.  The Lord has opened up the doors and I believe great days are in store for this wonderful coastal church.  God is good!

  • Sandy Pitcher:  Most of you have heard by now of Sandy’s passing last Monday morning, Memorial Day.  She served alongside her husband, Rev. Larry for many years… and on our district in the Pismo Beach area.  The Memorial Service will be at the Ontario 1st Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, June 10 at 11:00AM.

Summer Camps:  This… just in from Pastor Kathy Cannon and the SDMI Department…

Hello, everyone,

Happy 1st of June!  Summer is coming, which means the CHILDREN’S SUMMER CAMP is around the corner!  Los Angeles District’s children’s summer camp will be held at Granite Ridge from Sunday afternoon, July 23 to Friday morning, July 28.  The cost per camper is $250.00.  Each church that participates will also need to send one counselor per 8 children.  The cost for each counselor is simply the camps out-of-pocket expenses which are $125 per counselor.

The District’s SDMI committee has (3) full scholarships, (5) $100 scholarships and (4)  $25 scholarships  for campers this year – which will be randomly awarded on June 1.  All campers who are registered by that date are eligible to win.   If you would like to enter your campers in the scholarship drawing, please contact Kathy Cannon at Kathy@newnaz.org

There are a lot of new and innovative activities at Granite Ridge.  Great speakers, tons of fun, spiritual growth, and new friends.  This experience will have a lifelong impact on the children in your church.  Please do not hesitate to contact Kathy if you have any questions!  Camper Registration Packet (1)
