Few Thoughts 4-21-2017

Los Angeles District Greetings!

The wind has been blowing something fierce these recent days, but the skies are clear and the air is clean.  Unfortunately, though, the hills are beginning to return to the drier looking conditions.  With not much rain in the recent weeks, we’re seeing the hills transition from green to brown.  But… the good news is summer is coming, and with summer it means warm to hot temperatures.  Just the way I like it!

I have been basking in the awesome reports being shared on the Holy Week experiences from across the district these days.  Thank you for sharing with me reports of baptisms, special services, welcoming of new members, and so much more.  May Jesus be praised in all we do!

ENCOURAGEMENTA week later His disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.  Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”  Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see My hands.  Reach out your hand and put it into My side.  Stop doubting and believe.”  Thomas said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”  Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”  (John 20:26-29)

The disciples had all tried to convince Thomas that they had seen Jesus.  But, we know his reaction, “Unless I see… unless I touch… unless I put my hand… I just can’t believe!”  But one thing I like… Thomas didn’t fully give up.  He didn’t quit.  When he didn’t understand, he didn’t dismiss himself from the other 10 disciples and take off for the lake for some fishing.  He didn’t throw in the towel and say, “I’m done with this stuff.”

John tells us that one week later Thomas returned to be with the group.  No one knew that Jesus was going to show up again.  They just all remained together like Jesus had commanded earlier.  There were still tons of unanswered questions.  There were, perhaps many confused people.  But, one thing is for certain… they stayed together.  They met together.  Perhaps, they prayed together.  Something special happens when God’s people get together.

That’s why I like what the writer to the Hebrews says, “Do not forsake the assembling of believers together…”  Leslie has this shirt that she will often wear that reads, I LOVE SUNDAYS.   And I can say this because I know it’s true… She loves Sundays… because she loves it when we come together for worship.  Something always great happens when we, the church, come together.  Jesus shows up!

So now that the Easter celebration has happened… it’s one week later… I happen to believe that Jesus WILL show up as you, and your people come together for worship.  Are you looking for Him?  He’s here.

DISTRICT MATTERS Another wonderful weekend of special services around the district!

  • Filipino Combined Good Friday Service:  All of our Filipino congregations met together at LA First on Friday night for a special evening of worship and The Word together.  All of the Filipino pastors preached on the Final Seven Words of Jesus from the Cross.  A very special evening we enjoyed together.IMG_0896IMG_0901IMG_0911IMG_0922
  • Easter Sunday Morning:  Leslie and I were privileged to be part of two churches on Easter Sunday morning.  Our first stop was at L.A. Central City with Pastor Tony and Lucy Stallworth.  What a special morning we enjoyed together celebrating in the resurrection of our Lord!
  • Our second stop was with our brother and sisters at the Arise Mission CON.  Pastor and Mrs. Jong Lee are doing such a fabulous job in ministry.  I am most grateful for this church as they continue the work of the Lord to our people from N. Korea.        IMG_0952IMG_0957IMG_0962IMG_0966IMG_0956IMG_0964

I pray that all is well in your area of ministry and that you are gearing up for a fabulous weekend in your local church.  I love you and I look forward to seeing you soon!
